The Jena six incident notes are a the bottom of this post. It’s really too important to let go and not say something about it, but first…
U.S. Public School Superintendent fails English Literacy test….three times. LAWRENCE, Massachusetts (AP) Then responds by saying: ”It bothers me because I’m trying to understand the congruence of what I do here every day and this stupid test,” I might have used that same phrase when I went to school: “Nothing but a stupid test anyway.” “It don’t mean a hill of beans when you get out in real life.”
And get this. “Wilfredo Laboy, (the superintendent) who receives a 3 percent pay hike this month that will raise his salary to $156,560, recently put 24 teachers on unpaid administrative leave because they failed a basic English test.” But he is not put on unpaid leave. Is he appointed or elected to that position?
The kids in the Oregon public schools are learning “the Five Pillars of Islam.” put into the curriculum under World History. As part of the enlightenment process “class activities have included guest speakers (including an American soldier serving in Iraq and a practicing Muslim woman who is an American citizen living in Mountain Home) who talked about geography, dress, climate, religion, economy and culture and student skits, in which students prepare and perform three- to five-minute skits about the tenets of Islam belief: charity, fasting, prayer, belief, and pilgrimage.” More….
Question. Just possibly would there also be instruction about Christianity, or Judaism included in this world history class? Equal time. You know part of that “Fairness Doctrine” thing, or was it some kind of a separation thing. Did I hear a rumble of a jet full of ACLU lawyers rushing off to Nyssa, Ore?
The people at the University of California are extremely worried that the student body and the faculty are not diverse enough. “Even though Latino, African American and American Indian students account for a growing portion of California’s high school graduates, they remain a small percentage of the UC system’s freshman class.”
“The report, which was prepared by a study group on university diversity, says the University of California should work harder to increase transfer admissions of underrepresented students — African American, Latino and American Indian — and that the current method of determining freshman admission should be analyzed.”
They are VERY concerned of what they HAVE to do next to increase diversity….um….ah… well….for diversities sake. “We have to have faculty that looks like the students that are going to want to come to the University of California,” More… Now for Pete’s sake what are they gonna do? Possibly eliminate entrance exams and place less emphasis on SAT scores.
To make it to that exact perfect desired percentage, just go into the high schools and “look” at the students and pick and choose. You. You. You. And You in the back row with that baseball cap on side-backwards. You’ll do from this room. OK onward. Next school.
Tax dollars at work educating your kids, the leaders of tomorrow. I guess the greatest generation did not do such a good job educating today’s leaders. Where did we go wrong?
OK back to Jena Louisiana, a small southern relatively peaceful town of about 4000, 85% white and now a national disgrace. Google the Jena Six and there are over 3 million references. A tragedy. A disgrace all by itself, without the media and Al Sharpton and the marches in California intensifying the entire incident that could have and should have quietly been taken care by the locals. The school failed. The prosecutor failed. The jury failed. The kids were wrong for hanging the nooses in that tree, that is no more. The black kids were wrong in pursuing it. But then the school principal called it just a “prank.” Everyone failed the kids.
“The school responded to the protest by calling police and the district attorney. At an assembly the same day, the District Attorney Reed Walters, accompanied by armed policeman, addressed the students.”
“The kids didn’t say anything. They were listening. The kids were quiet. And so, District Attorney Reed Walters, you know, proceeded to tell those kids that ?I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen.? And the kids were just — it was like in awe that the district — you know, Reed Walters would tell these kids that. He held a pen in his hand and told those kids that, ?See this pen in my hand? I can end your lives with the stroke of a pen.? More…
In other words, kids, just shut up and stop this right here and now. Or else. Well, that did not set well. Additional acts of violence ensued in the following months. Black on white and white on black. The school held their stance of a prank gone wild. The town seemed to think it was overblown. It escalated into the final blow.
The school principal should be fired. The prosecutor should be fired. They should have been more interested in justice and rightness than in their zero tolerance policies. We’ve got too many educators who think zero tolerance is a good thing, when in fact, it is the lazy thing. We’ve got too many prosecutors on an agenda of desiring to appear to be tough by following the “letter of the law,” when in fact they are neglecting the spirit of the law. Johnny Sutton is one of those. And District Attorney Reed Walters is also one of those. Justice is not being done in Jena and the world knows it.
I do believe that if you do the crime, then get ready to do the time. But, in our world today, the ‘time’ can mean so many subjective things like intent, motive, and thoughts, and even economic class, and celebrity status influence decisions of the court, rather than objective realities of yes and no, guilty as charged, but justice must be served.
The kids need to be punished for each act of violence that occurred, but justice needs to be the central concern, not a zero tolerance policy. These are kids. with their entire future ahead of them and if a lesson is not learned now, then they are without hope of a future. I believe one of the five black kids already has a rap sheet, so he must be dealt with on those terms. The others, both white and black, need to learn a lesson about life, about a justice system that can work equally for all.
And I couldn’t care less what Al thinks.
As I See It.
