You may have read about the hoop-de-do that the City of Philadelphia is having with the Cradle of Liberty Council of Boy Scouts. The scouts have been in a building for over 80 years in downtown Philly, a building the scouts built, a building the scouts have maintained ever since, a building the scouts spent over 1.5 million to renovate in 1994 and a building the scouts themselves deeded over to the city for the privilege of occupying in perpetuity for a rent of $1.00 per year.
What a mistake that has turned out to be. but who could have known that some city counselors in 2007 would get all upset about the scout oath: “…To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”
The morally straight part is what bothers the gay city counselors. So the city came against the scouts and demanded that they either pay fair market rent ($200,000) for the building or change their discrimination policies, in particular against gays and atheists. Why the feminists have not thrown their hat into the ring is not clear. Boy Scouts could become just Scouts. It’s ugly, which is OK for the gays and atheists.
So city solicitor Shelley Smith says that, come June 1st, the local Scouts council must renounce the national policy, start paying rent, or leave:
“We’re not looking for the fight about it. But we will do what we have to do to defend the city’s policies on this issue.” Link.
The scouts have now sued the City.
On Friday, May 23, 2008, the Cradle of Liberty Council, Boy Scouts of America filed a complaint in Federal Court against the City of Philadelphia to protect the organization’s constitutional rights. This action comes after many months of discussion and every effort on the Council’s part to reach an amicable resolution with city officials regarding the Council’s headquarters at 22nd and Winter Streets.
Because its policies do not align with the views of officials in the city, the Cradle of Liberty Council was asked to vacate its historic headquarters or pay “fair market rent” for use of a facility the Scouts built, maintained and improved for the last 80 years at no cost to the City of Philadelphia. The First Amendment protects an organization’s right to determine its own policies. To suppress those opinions or policies, as the city seeks to do here, is unconstitutional.
It is truly unfortunate that this debate must continue and be played out through the legal system. However, the Cradle of Liberty Council must take the necessary actions to protect its rights and ensure continued service to the 53,000-plus young men and women in Philadelphia who are its true focus.
So the June 1st deadline is fast approaching, and national attention on the showdown could intensify. Solicitor Smith understands that it could get ugly if the scouts are evicted:
“As ugly as it may seem to some that we are taking action against an organization that people view as nobly as they view the Boy Scouts, we think that their policy is equally ugly.” Link.
The majority of boys of central Philadelphia will lose out, while the city council members will gloat as they count the votes from the gay and atheist community, if it turns out the scouts lose.

This is the same city council that passed a resolution (16-1) in 2005, calling on the federal government to “rapidly withdraw US troops from Iraq expeditiously.” In the resolution they stated:
“WHEREAS, Cindy Sheehan, whose son, Army Specialist Casey Sheehan was killed in Iraq in April 2004, has been waiting to speak to President Bush outside his ranch in Crawford, Texas and has been joined by other mothers whose children have been killed in Iraq is now on the Bring Our Troops Home bus tour throughout the U.S. in advance of the September 24, 2005 non-violent mobilization in Washington, D.C. to end the war;”
Philadelphia, the cradle of America’s beginnings, The home of the Liberty Bell, a very important historical city, but now, it’s home to all kinds of liberal misfits who are running the city.
What a shame. It’s now very ugly.
