Obama: Government should change behavior of the people.
Just about a year ago Obama was being interviewed on Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press,” when he said:
“Number one, we’re going to have to start doing a better job of conserving on energy,” Obama said. “Americans like to drive their big SUVs. They like to leave all the lights on in their house. We’re going to have to change our habits.”
“We’re going to have to cap the emission of greenhouse gases,” Obama said. “That means that power plants are going to have to adjust how they generate power. They will pass on those costs to consumers. … A lot of us who can afford it are going to have to pay more per unit of electricity, and that means we’re going to have to change our light bulbs, we’re going to have to shut the lights off in our houses.”
In the interview he was asked:
Q: How do you convince people to change their lifestyles, to live differently, or to turn the question on its ear, are voters ahead of the politicians on this stuff? Do they get it, and maybe the politicians don’t?
A: Well, I think, uh, I think voters do understand it. I think it is important for us to send some price signals to change behavior.
Our behavior must be changed.
We like the SUV’s and that’s bad. Raise the prices.
We like our lights on at night, and that’s bad. Add a tax to the bill.
We like a warm house in winter, and that’s bad. Tax the extra energy.
We like a cool house in summer, and that’s bad. Tax it, put a cap on it.
So the government will have to come in and force us to like it cooler in winter and warmer in the summer, and driving little wonder cars.
Tax it and they will change.
And Obama is the man to see that this is done, as he believes it’s the responsibility of the government to change behavior.
