Education or indoctrination

Published by Arnie at 8:43 am under Education

In Nebraska, a bill has been presented to the legislature which “would require home-school students to take state-mandated tests or have their schoolwork assessed by an outside evaluator. If studentsprogress falls short academically, they would be sent to public or private schools.”  Home-school pitch pits personal choice vs. government role

In California, the court “has ruled that several children in one homeschool family must be enrolled in a public school or “legally qualified”private school, and must attend,”  Judge orders homeschoolers into government education.   The appeals ruling said California law requires “persons between the ages of six and 18″ to be in school, “the public full-time day school,” with exemptions being allowed for those in a “private full-time day school” or those “instructed by a tutor who holds a valid state teaching credential for the grade being taught.”

Bob Unruh likens this ruling to be similar to the rulings of Nazi Germany of 1938 “when Adolf Hitler decided he wanted the state, and no one else, to control the minds of the nation’s youth.”

Question:  What is so great about public education?

From the Washington Times reporting on a new study.

• Half of high-school students could not say what the Renaissance was.

• Only two-thirds know that freedom of speech and freedom of religion are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

•25 percent could not identify Adolf Hitler. Ten percent said Hitler was a munitions manufacturer, perhaps confusing the infamous Nazi with Alfred Nobel, the Swedish chemist and arms manufacturer.

• Fewer than half can place the Civil War in the half-century 1850-1900.

• More than a quarter did not know that the Watergate investigations resulted in President Nixon’s resignation.

• 30 percent did not know that John F. Kennedy said: “And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

• Only 52 percent knew that the subject of George Orwell’s classic novel “1984″ is a totalitarian society which quashes individualism.

And then another question:  Do you want your kids indoctrinated into the current culture of moral relativism?  The following is an excerpt from the book “Values Clarification: A Handbook of Practical Strategies for Teachers and Students,” gleaned form this site.

The basic notion behind moral relativism is that each person must decide for themself according to their own estimates of conditions and consequences, and that no one can decide for him or impugn the decision to which he comes. This is a basically true statement, but as done with SO MUCH in modern psychology, the context of workability of this is drastically altered. The above statement is true and applies to GROWN, MATURE ADULTS who have a fairly solid moral foundation, intellectual capability and experience of life. Attempting to teach children this notion, with NO FIRM MORAL FOUNDATION, is simply absurd. But that is modern psychology. The manner in which they take situations out of context and apply them to completely different and non-applicable situations is not a rare case but more a typical occurrence in this field.

Every child needs to be taught a simple, exact, and strict code of conduct or morality, because a child does not yet possess the intellectual capability, experience or stability of character necessary to effectively apply the ideas of moral relativism. But instead, the modern educationists declare all “moral teachings” as “arbitrary” (which they are), attempt to teach children how to make “moral decisions” (which they can’t), and subsequently prevent them from developing a firm moral basis which would give them a sensible guide for determining right and wrong behavior.

Children must FIRST be taught some exact code of behavior. They must be told what is expected of them in no uncertain terms. If it is left “up to each person to decide” the actual result will be children who turn into immoral, wishy washy, and “unable to take a firm position on anything” type people. Of course, possibly that is what the psychologists desire, because this is what results when their theories and methods are applied.

Agree or disagree?

Homeschool, private school or indoctrination?

There is no doubt in my mind that our public school system is not doing our children justice, is not providing a quality education, is not equipping our kids with the skills necessary to tackle the challenges of an adult life, but is dumbing them down to the common.  No child left behind has come to mean all kids must advance at the same pace as the slowest, because the slowest may have his/her psyche and self-esteem damaged.

As I see It.
